DISK FILES
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
Before you proceed, make sure you have all of the following files on your
INSTANT REPLAY FOOTBALL simulation disk.
README .DOC - Of course you have this one!
GO .BAT - Batch file to read README.DOC instructions with.
IRF .EXE - The START-UP file for Instant Replay Football.
MAIN .NFL - Main simulation program file.
STAND .ING - Team final standings data file.
TEAMS .DTA - Individual and Team data file.
Notice team data files are dated 1986 for season year they apply to. This will
help you distinguish team data when you register and aquire additional data
disks.
WHAT IS INSTANT REPLAY FOOTBALL ?
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
First of all, Instant Replay Football is a SIMULATION, and NOT a GAME. It will
allow the computer to simulate a replay of a complete NFL football game using
actual NFL team data. You the user have very little to say or do except select
the teams, quarterbacks, and display speed. The computer plays the game while
you sit back and watch! No two games will ever be the same, even with the same
teams. All results are based on random number generations, but are calculated
to each players true statistical data for the 1986 playing season, making the
outcome amazingly realistic. INSTANT REPLAY FOOTBALL uses REAL player names,
not just their jersey numbers. This will help you to follow the simulation and
keep it interesting for the "spectator". Strong teams will perform strong, and
the weak teams will perform weak.
But you know what they say, "ON ANY GIVEN SUNDAY...."
WHAT CAN I DO WITH INSTANT REPLAY FOOTBALL ?
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
The most common use for this simulation will be for football-buffs to replay
their favorite teams season to see how close the results come, or to see if
they can do a little better this time then they did in real-life! In that re-
spect, INSTANT REPLAY FOOTBALL could be looked at as a game. But since there
are no real strategical movements available to the user (except in selection
of the starting quarterback) we like to refer to it as a simulation.

WHY SHAREWARE ?
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
Why is INSTANT REPLAY FOOTBALL being distributed by SHAREWARE ? Very simply
because we believe in the shareware concept. There are way too many software
programs around claiming to be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but you
can't see them work until you drop down $50-$100 (sometimes even more) of your
hard-earned dollars. And if it doesn't perform the way you thought it would,
YOU LOSE. We're confident that once you see INSTANT REPLAY FOOTBALL in action
you will want a registered copy. If you don't, WE LOSE by not making it good
enough. As a matter of fact the idea for INSTANT REPLAY FOOTBALL was born when
one of our programmers purchased a well known commercial product of a similar
nature for close to $100, and was very disappointed.
WHY SHOULD I REGISTER ?
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
First of all, it's the RIGHT THING TO DO (If you want to continue to use the
program). Second, it will encourage update versions to be developed. Third,
you will be added to our mailing list, advising you of updates and new items
as they are available. Fourth, there is a difference in the two versions.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THIS VERSION AND THE REGISTERED VERSION ?
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
Its a BIG ONE. This version is full featured and complete in every way, except
it will only play the FIRST HALF of the game. You will have to register to
receive the entire game version. Also, since the shareware version cannot play
a complete game, there is no need to have a stat compiler, so it will only be
found on registered users disks.
HOW DO I REGISTER ?
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
You can receive a registered copy of INSTANT REPLAY FOOTBALL by sending your
name and address, along with a check or money order (no credit cards) for $40
(Arizona residents add $2.68 for sales tax) to:

PLAYING THE GAME
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
OK, enough of the pre-game activities, lets get the simulation going.
INSTALLATION
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
If you are going to run INSTANT REPLAY FOOTBALL from floppy disk, then the
distribution disk or the registered users disk will be ready to run from drive
A: (as long as all files are present on the disk as previously mentioned). But
PLEASE take an extra minute before loading the simulation, and make a back-up
copy of this disk.
Hard disk users will want to copy all of the disk files to a subdirectory on
their hard disk and use the distribution disk as their back-up. They will also
benefit from an increased speed during disk reads.
Disk reads will always be made from the default directory, so keep all program
files in the same directory or a read error will occur.
Once you have backed up your files you are ready to begin.
TO BEGIN, type: >IRF and press <ENTER>
In a few seconds, the title screen will appear. (The imaginary place-kicker
will make that kick every time) Then you will see a screen similar to what you
see in your newspaper sports section, as the complete final standings for each
conference and division will come up. The conference champions (Super Bowl
teams) will be highlighted by a blinking "*". From here you will be asked to
enter the visiting team name, followed by a disk access, and the home team,
with another disk access. Don't worry if you select the wrong teams, you will
be prompted if you wish to re-select.
Once team selections have been made, the computer will determine if a team has
more than 1 quarterback on its roster. If so, you will have the option of
selecting which QB the team will use, or let the computer select. If you let
the computer select, you may see both QBs play in the same game. Their passing
attempts are based on their actual percentage of the teams total passing plays
attempts during the real season, and will be split accordingly for the game.
Programmers note : If you are going to replay the entire season with INSTANT
REPLAY FOOTBALL, you should allow the computer to select the quarterbacks for
each game to keep the quarterbacks attempts in line with reality. Use specific
quarterback selections for key games only, or play-off games when they occur.
After you select quarterbacks (if applicable), you will go to the screen
display-speed screen. Here you can select how fast the game will be played.
Selecting SUPER-FAST will play the entire game in about 3-4 minutes, while
SUPER-SLOW will play the same game in about 25 minutes. If you are only
interested in the final score and statistics (season replayers) the SUPER-FAST
mode will be perfect. But you will find it hard to follow the game since the
screen changes so quickly. If you want to sit back with some popcorn and your
favorite beverage and watch the game, select SUPER-SLOW. Once you have made
your speed choice the game will begin.
THE SCREEN DISPLAY
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
The display screen is made up of 4 parts. The top portion of your screen will
be the scoreboard. All pertinent information is available. The major portion
of the screen will be used for the football field layout. Hashmarks are in 2
yard increments, with the home team stadium name shown below the field. To the
left is the commentary window, where defensive set and offensive play results
are shown as they occur. At the bottom is the control panel which gives you
four choices to pick from for function key activity:
F1-STATS :Press this key at any time for an up to the last play scoring
summary and statistical total for each team.
F2-OPTIONS :Press this key and a second menu appears, giving you the option
to change the display speed, or to begin a new simulation.
F9-FREEZE :Press this key to temporarily pause the simulation. Hitting the
space bar will resume play.
F10-QUIT :Terminates the simulation, and returns you to the DOS prompt.
As the simulation continues, play by play commentary is given in the window
to the left of the playing field. After each play has finished, the football
marker will move to update field position, and the scoreboard will be changed
as well. You may notice at times a 4th down and 0 to go for a first down. This
is not an error. As you know from real football games, players never seem to
gain EXACTLY 1 yard. You hear TV announcers say things like:"It's 3rd down and
a L-O-N-G 3" or "It's 4th and inches". Also, many times it appears as though
enough yardage was gained for a first down, but the measurement shows it to be
short by a half a football length. So just like in real football games, the
INSTANT REPLAY FOOTBALL commentator will report what he sees, but the final
word rests in the hands of the officials and statisticians.
When the Game has ended, a complete scoring summary and team statistic report
will be shown, followed by an option to quit or play another game.

We plan to update INSTANT REPLAY FOOTBALL on a regular basis. This can only
be done meaningfully through feedback from end-users.
Therefore, if you have any ideas or suggestions (as well as any bugs you may
find) please let us know. We would also like to receive copies of any replay
statistical data you may compile from playing INSTANT REPLAY FOOTBALL. This
will help us gauge the realism of the output and pin-point areas that might
require adjustment.
Registered Users will be notified of all new products when they are available.
